WatchDOGS Kick Off Party
Tuesday, August 27th
6 – 7:30p in the SVE Gym
Okay, okay…what is this “WatchDOGS” thing really all about?
SVE parents, John and Alison Lashmet, where instrumental in bringing this national program to our school six years ago. “A friend of ours was telling us about his day as a WatchDOGS Dad. He was beaming with pride as he shared all about his day at his children’s school and how it was one of his favorite days of the year,” Alison recalls. The Lashmet’s started talking and realized that we didn’t have as many opportunities for dads to come volunteer at Summit View. “We decided to look into the program and were so impressed with the mission that we knew it needed to be a part of our school community.”
WatchDOGS stands for “Dads Of Great Students.” The main missions of the program is to have positive male role models in our schools (showing our kids that education is important) and to have an extra set of eyes in the building to increase security and reduce bullying. The program grows every year and is currently in over 6400 schools nationwide.
Beyond the benefits to the school, students and dads love the experience. “I can’t typically volunteer in the classroom in the middle of the day, so it’s nice to dedicate an entire day. I enjoy eating lunch with my kids and their friends and be a part of their recess games,” Blake Malia/SVE Dad shares. “Spending time in classrooms throughout the school gives me an appreciation of what goes on during the day as well as an opportunity to build relationships with the teachers.”
Principal Boser loves having this powerful program at our school. He enjoys connecting with WatchDOGS to hear about their experience. “Dads are energized and exhausted at the end of the day. It’s amazing.”
We invite all dads and father-figures to be a part of our WatchDOGS program. Come to our Kick Off Party on Tuesday, August 27th from 6 to 7:30p for a “date night with dad” with pizza and games. Dads in attendance will be given priority access to the WatchDOGS calendar sign up. Don’t forget to RSVP so we have enough pizza and volunteers.
